Work Experience Student Gets Stuck Into Cage Cricket

Throughout this year we have had a fantastic opportunity to be part of Active Surrey’s Get Active 50+ initiative. This has enabled us to run very successful programmes in Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead and Runnymede Boroughs, with more sessions planned for Woking too.
Following on from 2016’s successful sessions in Eastleigh, Cage Cricket launched it’s 2017 programme with a training session for new players, including five Police Officers from the Eastleigh area.
Cage Cricket are delighted to have forged close links with PHAB over the past six months, working specifically with the Epsom and the Watford Branches to deliver Cage Cricket.
Portsmouth Football Club’s community arm, Pompey in the Community (PITC), now has a Cage Cricket kit to use, thanks to a donation from Dr David Allen, a well-known Portsmouth resident and former University lecturer.
The launch of the “Not Out” programme by Dementia Friendly Hampshire and Bournemouth University’s Dementia Institute will research the impact of sport on dementia. The research will focusing on both those diagnosed and their families, while giving people the opportunity to play Cage Cricket.
A new Cage Cricket kit, funded by Southampton City Council’s Community Chest Grant’s Scheme, has now gone into St Mary’s – one of the most diverse and deprived communities in Southampton. The kit will be maintained by West Itchen Community Trust (WICT), based in Derby Road.
Cage Cricket has been shortlisted for a major national award: The Women’s Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards, which recognises individuals and organisations doing the most to progress women’s sport. In particular, the award acknowledges the work by Sheromie Brewster in London and Barbados.
Whilst Cage Cricket continues to expand around the UK, the Scottish Highlands is perhaps not the first place that springs to mind. In Oban participation in Cage has exploded since 2012, proving to be a hugely popular pastime, even in the depths of a Highland winter.
